CHR backs Senate bill on ‘Magna Carta of Barangay Health Workers’

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) voiced support on Thursday for Senate Bill (SB) No. 2838, known as the “Magna Carta of Barangay Health Workers,” which seeks to formally recognize the rights and contributions of barangay health workers (BHWs) across the Philippines.

The proposed legislation, sponsored by Senator Joseph Victor Ejercito and co-sponsored by 12 of his colleagues, aims to improve compensation and benefits for BHWs in recognition of their vital role in primary healthcare.

“It is crucial to recognize that barangay health workers were frontline responders during the COVID-19 pandemic, assisting and monitoring affected individuals within their communities. This underscores their essential role in promoting health and wellness in their areas,” the CHR stated.

The CHR emphasized that passing the bill would foster a culture of care and respect for healthcare workers at the community level. ” Valuing the barangay health workers this way can redound to better health of the communities they serve,” it added.

If enacted, SB 2838 would provide BHWs with just compensation and benefits, ensuring better conditions to safeguard their welfare and well-being as they continue to support public health nationwide.
