Kanlaon Eruption: DOH warns of health hazards from volcanic ash; shares safety reminders

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa has urged the public to exercise caution after the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) raised the alert status of Kanlaon Volcano to Level 2.

On Monday night, the active volcano located on Negros Island erupted for six minutes, producing a 5,000-meter plume. This triggered ashfalls in the affected areas, which put residents nearby at risk of experiencing breathing difficulties, among other health problems.

In response, the Department of Health (DOH) Western Visayas Center for Health Development (CHD) has been actively distributing facemasks, safety goggles, hygiene kits, jerry water cans, and disaster relief tents to the affected towns.

Nearby hospitals have been placed on Code White to ensure readiness for any emergencies.

Health advisory for residents near the volcano

Herbosa emphasized the importance of following local government evacuation orders and provided several key safety measures:

1.       Protect your lungs. Close doors and windows or use wet curtains or cloths to block gaps where ash and gases could enter. Wear face masks properly, or use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth. Those with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) should have an adequate supply of their inhalers and use them as directed.

2.       Protect your eyes. Wear safety goggles if available. Avoid using contact lenses, switching to glasses instead. Do not rub your eyes, if irritated. Rinse them with clean, lukewarm running water. Seek medical attention for any persistent eye problems.

3.       Protect your food.  Wash hands thoroughly before cooking and eating. Clean fruits and vegetables with running water. Cover water containers properly to avoid contamination. Check the expiration dates on canned goods and stored food.

Residents experiencing difficulty breathing or other health issues are advised to consult a doctor or health center immediately.

“Let us be careful and listen to the advice of our local government officials,” Herbosa said in a statement.
