The Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo held a meeting with members of the Filipino community in Japan on issues involving recognition of foreign divorces and hearings via video conference.

Philippine Ambassador to Japan Mylene Garcia Albano organized the dialogue held last March 6 at the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo.

The SC Public Information Office on Wednesday said Chief Justice Gesmundo was with Associate Justices Rodil V. Zalameda, Samuel H. Gaerlan, and Jose Midas P. Marquez during the virtual conference.

Several cases involving recognition of divorce between a Filipino and her Japanese husband have reached the trial courts and were elevated before the Court of Appeals (CA). Some of the cases have even reached the SC.

During the dialogue, Chief Justice Gesmundo expressed the SC’s gratitude for bringing to their attention the concerns of the members of the Filipino community.
