Indigenous people rally vs US, Duterte

Tensions rose between the Manila Police District and hundreds of members of various indigenous and militant groups, after protesters marched toward the United States Embassy to mark the 26th anniversary of the bases treaty rejection on Friday.

The rallyists also protested the violent dispersal that happened in 2016 when a police utility vehicle plowed into a group of protesters injuring at least 50 of them.

This is the second attempt by the groups to reach the US Embassy.

Sandugo, Bayan, and Tindeg Ranao were among the groups who marched from Plaza Salamanca, located at Taft Avenue corner Kalaw, towards the US Embassy.

An effigy of US President Donald Trump riding a missile with an embossed image of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was set to be burned in front of the US embassy as part of their plan to show their displeasure against the US government.

MPD authorities had assured maximum tolerance in dealing with the protesters.
