The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said it is supporting the government’s initiatives to bolster the safety and security of media professionals, particularly as the midterm elections approach.
DILG Undersecretary Rolando Puno emphasized the crucial role of the media in a democratic society, highlighting their contribution to informed public decision-making through fact-checking, public opinion influence, and holding political figures accountable.
He noted that this vital function unfortunately exposes them to considerable dangers that can threaten their lives.
Puno, representing Secretary Jonvic Remulla at the launch and reactivation of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Media Security Vanguards in Quezon City, underscored the government’s commitment to raising awareness about media security protocols and fostering stronger collaboration between the media and law enforcement agencies.
This partnership aims to ensure prompt and effective responses to any threats directed at journalists.
The reactivation event was spearheaded by Presidential Communications Office Secretary Jay Ruiz and Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) Executive Director Jose Torres.
