The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) slammed the brakes on “Chasing Tuna in the Ocean,” tossing the film out of local theaters due to scenes showcasing China’s infamous nine-dash line.
Last year, MTRCB allowed the screening of “Barbie” despite calls to ban the phenomenal movie due to its depiction of nine-dash line.
The film, rated “X” by the agency, found itself swimming in troubled waters, marked as “Not for Public Exhibition” within the country.
The MTRCB’s First Review Committee gave the film a thorough once-over, only to find a direct shot at the Philippines’ pride, in violation of Presidential Decree No. 1986.
MTRCB Chairperson and CEO Lala Sotto didn’t mince words, declaring:
“We will not tolerate any content that undermines the prestige of the Republic of the Philippines.”
“The MTRCB will continue to exercise its power and prerogatives consistent with its mandate,” Sotto added.
“Chasing Tuna in the Ocean” records the hardship of the fishermen fishing for tuna in the Indian Ocean. It presents “the fearlessness and responsibility of fishermen” from a delicate perspective, the filmmakers said.
