Mayon heightens activity, spews more lava amid frequent tremors

THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) said lava flow at Mayon Volcano in Albay had extended further in the Mi-isi gully from 1.6 kilometers on to 1.7 km. as of Tuesday.

The lava flows in Basud and Bonga gullies remained at 3.8 km and 3.2 km, respectively, the Phivolcs said.

It said the daily pyroclastic density current (PDC) signals or “uson” increased from nine to 14.

More “uson,” rockfalls were observed in the volcano during the past 24 hours.

The daily volcanic earthquakes increased from 20 to 31, lasting up to 83 minutes.

Meanwhile, a total of 287 rockfall events were reported, which is lower against the 428 rockfalls previously recorded.

A short-term deflation of the edifice with shorter-term inflation on the northeastern flank was likewise noted.

On Monday, an estimated 957 tons of sulfur dioxide emission was recorded, lower than the 1,771 tons in the previous report.

The crater glow was described as fair and visible to the naked eye.

Mayon emitted a weak plume reaching 1,300 meters above the crater before drifting south and southwest, Phivolcs reported.
