PH, Vietnam tackle rice trade, human trafficking

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and newly appointed Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung discussed strengthening rice trade and expanding cooperation against human trafficking and online scam operations during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit on Thursday in Cebu.

The proposed arrangement aims to ensure a stable rice supply between the Philippines and Vietnam, one of Manila’s largest rice suppliers, while deepening agricultural cooperation between the Southeast Asian neighbors.

The discussion on rice cooperation came as countries across the region continue to grapple with food security challenges, rising demand, and supply disruptions linked to global economic pressures and climate-related risks.

Both leaders also highlighted the significance of the 50th anniversary of Philippines-Vietnam diplomatic relations this year, expressing confidence that the milestone would open new opportunities for trade and economic engagement.

Aside from agriculture, Mr. Marcos and Hung discussed expanding cooperation against transnational crimes, including online scam hubs and human trafficking operations that have increasingly affected Southeast Asia.

The two leaders likewise explored ways to enhance tourism cooperation to further boost regional connectivity and economic activity.

President Marcos met Hung during the Vietnamese leader’s first ASEAN Summit since assuming office, congratulating him on his appointment and reaffirming Manila’s commitment to stronger bilateral ties.
