‘Maximum police visibility in transportation hubs for Holy Week’

Police visibility in major transportation hubs across Metro Manila and other parts of the country has been intensified as travelers begin to crowd bus terminals, airports, and seaports for the Holy Week break.

Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said Monday that the heightened presence of police personnel is part of the nationwide alert status that took effect on March 29, coinciding with Palm Sunday.

“The increased police presence on the road, in churches, transportation hubs, and other places of convergence is intended to provide maximum security and assistance to all our kababayan,” Nartatez said.

“Our mandate is to serve and protect. We will keep it that way, especially at this time of the year when people need peace of mind for reflection,” he added.

Around 2.4 million passengers are expected to pass through various seaports nationwide, while airport authorities project 1.3 million travelers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) throughout the Holy Week.

Nartatez said the security measures aim to ensure safe and orderly travel for millions of Filipinos observing Semana Santa, including those using major roads leading to and from transportation hubs.

He emphasized that while security will be tight, police will work to keep the flow of people moving smoothly.

“Travelers can expect tight but efficient security screening. Our kababayan can also expect Police Assistance Desks for quick and reliable response to requests for assistance,” he said.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier underscored the need for a “whole‑of‑government” approach to ensure a peaceful Holy Week.

On major roads, the PNP is preparing for heavy traffic as private vehicles are expected to surge on expressways and national highways.

Nartatez noted that road safety remains a priority, citing historical data showing an increase in vehicular accidents during the long weekend.

The PNP chief also reminded the public that safety begins with individual responsibility, urging motorists to inspect their vehicles before embarking on long drives.
