SC plea assails some provisions of BARMM laws

A PETITION was filed at the Supreme Court (SC) seeking to declare unconstitutional the Bangsamoro Autonomy Act No. 86 (BAA 86), as well as provisions of the Bangsamoro Autonomy Act No. 88 (BAA 88).

The petition was filed on Monday by civil society leaders Sultan Alim Saad Amate and Maulana Mamutuk.

The BAA 86 is the Bangsamoro Parliamentary Districts Act of 2025 which provided for the allotment of parliamentary district representative seats in the BARMM. 

On the other hand, the BAA 88 which is a law amending a previous statute that provides for the Bangsamoro Electoral Code of the BARMM.

Among the challenged provisions were sections 16, 17, and 18 of the BAA 88.

The plea sought the issuance of a temporary restraining order to enjoin the Commission on Elections from enforcing the assailed provisions.

Likewise, petitioners sought to restrain the poll body from spending P500-million appropriated for the conduct of the first BARMM parliamentary election.
