Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson on Sunday urged the public to report gasoline stations that prematurely raise fuel prices, following reports that some outlets have already increased pump prices ahead of the scheduled adjustment.
Lacson said early price hikes violate Republic Act No. 8479 and Republic Act No. 7394. Consumers who encounter such practices may file complaints with the Philippine National Police (PNP) or their respective local government units.
“They must be reported to authorities… raising prices ahead of schedule or hoarding fuel may be liable for hoarding and profiteering… and unfair or deceptive sales practice,” he said.
RA No. 8479, or the Downstream Oil Industry Deregulation Act of 1998, prohibits cartelization, predatory pricing, and other anti-competitive practices in the downstream oil industry to protect consumers.
RA No. 7394, or the Consumer Act of the Philippines of 1992, safeguards consumers from deceptive, unfair, and highly exploitative sales practices.
The Department of Energy, under Secretary Sharon Garin, has instructed the PNP and local government units to report violations and pursue appropriate criminal and administrative cases against erring operators.
Filipino motorists are bracing for another round of fuel price hikes as global crude prices climb amid fears of supply disruptions due to tensions in the Middle East.
Industry estimates show kerosene prices may rise by ₱24.92 per liter, diesel by ₱19.62 per liter, and gasoline by ₱10.43 per liter. Final price adjustments are expected to be announced Monday, March 9.
