Angara: DepEd to anchor policies on welfare of learners

The Department of Education has committed to prioritize students in the agency’s continuous reforms in various, holistic capacities within the agency.

In Monday’s celebration of the International Day of Education, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the agency’s policies are anchored on the welfare of learners.

Angara also touted the changes being made during his watch, such as the increased capacity of its School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP), which has been recently expanded, carrying its budget of P25.7 billion that will prioritize more learners in need.

He also paid particular focus to the learning foundations, such as in early childhood education, which he believes are critical for students’ growth within the classroom.

“‘Pag mahina ang pundasyon, mahina din ang itatayong gusali o itatayong halili (If the foundation is weak, the building or the replacement structure will also be weak). So definitely, and it doesn’t just involve what we teach in the classroom. It involves what we do at home,” Angara said.

The feeding program serves part of that foundational capacity, the secretary noted.
Within the borders of technology, Angara encouraged the use of educational tools such as Canva and Google, which are now being made available by the agency.

“Let’s make use of the tools being made available to you by the Department to maximize our students’ learning. We really want to make things more fun, more engaging,” he said.
