The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Friday announced that sections of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) adjacent to West and North Avenues in Quezon City will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic, in accordance with the planned girder launching operations for the Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7).
The temporary closures are intended to safeguard the motoring public while heavy equipment and machinery lift sections of a steel superstructure that will link the MRT-7’s North EDSA turnback track along West Avenue.
MMDA Chairman Don Artes said traffic enforcers from the agency and the Quezon City government, as well as traffic marshals from DOTr’s private contractor, will be deployed to minimize traffic disruptions.
“Minimal traffic is expected during the partial closure of portions of EDSA during nighttime, but big impact on traffic is expected during full closure to give way to the construction activities,” Artes said.
Along EDSA near North Avenue, portions of the two outermost lanes on the northbound direction and the two innermost lanes on the southbound direction will be closed to vehicle traffic starting February 1.
Temporary lane closures will be implemented during girder launching activities, which will be done from 10 p.m. to 4 p.m. During lane closures, two zipper lanes will be opened in the opposite direction to lessen the impact on motorists and commuters.
Motorists are advised to use alternate routes for vehicles going to Balintawak and Cubao during the scheduled lane closures.
After the girder launching activities are completed, the tower support systems will be taken down, and restoration works at closed lanes will be done at the expense of the MRT-7 contractor, according to the DOTr.
Reopening of closed lanes at northbound direction of EDSA is scheduled on May 8, while the southbound direction is scheduled on May 18.
As of December 2025, MRT-7 is 82.01-percent complete with commercial operations covering the entire Quezon City segment from North EDSA to Sacred Heart targeted by the first half of 2027.
