ASEAN diplomats discuss ‘ways forward’ on Myanmar peace efforts

CEBU CITY — Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Theresa Lazaro on Wednesday held discussions with Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) counterparts during the Extended Informal Consultation on the Five-Point Consensus (5PC), where they exchanged views and explored ways forward for Myanmar peace efforts.

In a post on X, Lazaro said the top diplomats reaffirmed their commitment to finding a peaceful and lasting solution for Myanmar.

“We shared views on the implementation of the 5PC, discussed ways forward, and reaffirmed ASEAN’s collective resolve in finding a peaceful and lasting solution that is Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led. #ASEAN2026,” she wrote.

During the first ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM), Lazaro updated her counterparts on the outcomes of her recent visit to Myanmar.

“Had engaging discussions with my #ASEAN colleagues, as concurrent Chair and Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on #Myanmar, during the Extended Informal Consultation on the Implementation of the Five-Point Consensus #5PC,” she said.

The two-day closed-door ministerial talks took place just one week after Myanmar held its third and final round of elections during a month-long general poll initiated by the ruling military junta, which has been in power since overthrowing Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government in February 2021.

On January 7, Lazaro met with senior leaders of Myanmar to discuss regional geopolitical developments, the country’s political situation, upcoming elections, and the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus.

On January 23, the Philippines, under Lazaro’s leadership, hosted the first Myanmar Stakeholders’ Meeting in Tagaytay.

Participants exchanged views on the effective implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.

In November, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed Lazaro as the Philippines’ Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair in Myanmar to aid in facilitating a peaceful resolution.
