The City of Makati has been recognized as an A-List City for 2025 by global environmental organization CDP, marking the third consecutive year it has earned the distinction.
The recognition places Makati among 120 cities worldwide acknowledged for leadership in environmental transparency and climate action.
“This recognition reflects our continuing commitment to environmental stewardship and climate resilience. In Makati, we understand that transparency is the foundation of effective climate action. By sharing our environmental data and progress with the global community, we hold ourselves accountable and contribute to the collective effort to address climate change,” Mayor Nancy Binay said in a statement.
CDP operates the world’s only independent environmental disclosure system.
In 2025, more than 1,000 cities, states, and regions submitted environmental data, with 120 cities receiving an A score for comprehensive disclosure, advanced governance, and progress in ecological resilience.
To earn an A score, a city must meet several leadership criteria, including publicly disclosing environmental data through the Track platform, maintaining a city-wide emissions inventory, publishing a credible climate action plan, completing a climate risk and vulnerability assessment, and setting a clear climate adaptation goal to address present and future hazards.
Binay underscored the importance of sustaining these efforts for future generations.
“The climate crisis demands action, not just words. We have taken concrete steps to reduce emissions, strengthen resilience, and protect our communities. This A-List recognition validates our approach, but more importantly, it reinforces our responsibility to do more,” she said.
Makati’s climate action strategy includes detailed greenhouse gas emissions inventories, climate risk assessments, and action plans aimed at delivering measurable results. The city has shown leadership through initiatives covering green infrastructure, sustainable transportation, waste management, and disaster preparedness.
“As one of the Philippines’ most dynamic cities, Makati has a unique responsibility to lead by example,” Binay said. “We are not only the financial and commercial heart of the nation, but also a community committed to building a sustainable future. Our participation in CDP reinforces our position as a city that takes climate action seriously and delivers results that benefit our residents and the planet.”
The 120 cities on the 2025 CDP A-List represent every inhabited continent and include both large and small urban centers that set global benchmarks for environmental leadership. Through its participation in CDP, Makati reaffirmed its commitment to providing critical data that enables communities, policymakers, and private sector partners to make informed, climate-resilient decisions.
“Climate change affects all of us, regardless of borders. By working together and sharing our progress, cities like Makati can inspire others to take action. We will continue to innovate and ensure that our children inherit a city that is not only prosperous, but also sustainable and resilient,” Binay said.
