Navy conducts security runs for ASEAN confabs

The Philippine Navy’s Naval Forces Central (NFC) has conducted sealift missions and maritime security patrols across key areas in the Visayas as part of preparations for activities related to the forthcoming ASEAN Summit 2026.

The drills, held Jan. 12-13, involving naval vessels BRP Manobo and Boat Attack 482 of the 2nd Patrol Boat Division, carried out coordinated operations within the command’s area of responsibility to support transport and security requirements for the upcoming conference.

BRP Manobo undertook sealift missions in Bohol, ensuring the safe and efficient transport of military personnel, rolling cargoes, and equipment intended for the ASEAN summit-related activities

The Navy said the mission proceeded smoothly following thorough planning, close supervision, and the implementation of strict safety protocols.

For its part, BA-482 conducted maritime security patrols while enroute to Capt. Veloso Pier at Naval Base Rafael Ramos in Lapu-Lapu City.

“Both maritime and naval operations affirmed the Command’s role in supporting transport and maritime security requirements across various areas in the Visayas in preparation for the conduct of various activities and engagements for the ASEAN Summit 2026 in the Visayas region,” the Navy said.

Meanwhile, Philippine National Police acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said they have been preparing for the ASEAN conference for more than one year.

Nartatez said the PNP is coordinating with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and concerned local government units, as well as other law enforcement agencies to ensure peace and order during the country’s hosting of the ASEAN meetings and related events.

“In coordination with other law enforcement agencies, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and local government units, we are ready now to implement or go with our security operations for ASEAN,” Nartatez said in a press briefing at Malacañang.

“We have not monitored or gathered any threats with regard to the conduct of the ASEAN meetings,” he added.

AFP chief Lt. Gen. Rommel Roldan said the military’s role was to provide support to the PNP in implementing security measures, particularly in key venues where ASEAN events and summits will be held.

Nartatez said VIP lanes will be enforced to ensure the smooth and secure movement of foreign delegates and visiting heads of state, similar to arrangements implemented during previous ASEAN summits hosted by the Philippines.

The Philippines is a founding member of ASEAN and has previously hosted major ASEAN summits and ministerial meetings, most notably in 2017.

As host of various ASEAN-related activities this year, the Philippines is expected to welcome regional leaders, senior officials, and delegates, prompting heightened but calibrated security preparations.
