Relatives, friends share holidays with inmates

THE Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has noted a significant increase in visitors at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City during the recently concluded Christmas and New Year.

In his report to BuCor chief Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. NBP officer-in-charge Supt. Roger Boncales said a total of 7,168 relatives and friends of inmates trooped to facility between Dec. 23 and Jan. 2.

Of this number, regular family visits accounted for 4,676 while 2,492 were logged as stay-in or conjugal calls.

Catapang explained that for the prisoners, these visits were a “lifeline,” providing emotional support and a reminder of their lives outside the confines of corrections facility and the ability to spend quality time together, even behind bars, helps mitigate some of the emotional strain associated with incarceration.
