Vice Mayor Aimee Paz Lamasan of Dueñas town, Iloilo died on Wednesday, December 31, after accidentally shooting herself in the stomach.
In a Facebook post, Dueñas Mayor Robert Martin Pama confirmed the incident and paid tribute to Lamasan.
“There are no goodbyes between us. See you in the next life. I know we will still be together. Rest in peace, my beloved vice mayor,” Pama wrote.
Lamasan reportedly shot herself at her residence in Barangay Tabuc Suba, La Paz, Iloilo City on Tuesday morning, December 30.
Police Colonel Kim Legada, head of the Iloilo City Police Office, said the incident occurred at around 7 a.m. and was reported after Lamasan was taken to the hospital.
Based on initial investigation, Lamasan was about to place her 9mm pistol into her bag when the firearm accidentally discharged and struck her in the dining area of the house. She was preparing to travel back to Dueñas at the time.
Lamasan was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery to remove the bullet from the right side of her stomach but later succumbed to her injuries.
