PNP hails public compliance for peaceful New Year

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday, January 1, credited nationwide public cooperation as a key factor in ensuring a peaceful and orderly New Year’s celebration, according to PNP acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.

Nartatez said no serious threats or significant incidents were recorded before and during the celebrations welcoming 2026, particularly in urban areas where major festivities were held.

“I commend all our personnel on the ground for successfully implementing our security plan which led to the peaceful and orderly New Year celebration across the country,” said Nartatez.

He stressed that public compliance, alongside close coordination with local government units (LGUs) and partner agencies, played a crucial role in maintaining peace and order and addressing public safety concerns.

“The coordination with local government units and other agencies and stakeholders also played a key role in peace and order and in responding to all public safety concerns,” he said.

While some cracker-related injuries were reported, police units responded immediately, preventing further harm. Nartatez said the PNP’s campaign against illegal firecrackers yielded positive results, citing increased public compliance with safety regulations.

“We saw a higher level of public compliance. Many communities opted for organized and LGU-led fireworks displays. Our police units conducted inspections, checkpoints, and confiscation operations which reduced the circulation of prohibited firecrackers and helped prevent injuries,” he said.

The PNP also observed high compliance with the ban on indiscriminate firing, with Nartatez noting improved public awareness that celebratory gunfire is a serious offense.

Fewer incidents were recorded compared to previous years, and reported cases were promptly investigated. Police personnel were likewise reminded of the policy of zero tolerance for violations.

Nartatez underscored that public cooperation remains essential to sustaining peace and order during major holiday celebrations.

“The PNP cannot maintain order alone without the help of the people,” he said, thanking the public for following safety guidelines and reporting incidents to authorities.

Looking ahead, Nartatez said the PNP will continue intelligence-driven operations against manufacturers and distributors of prohibited firecrackers even beyond the holiday season.

Police visibility will also be maintained in transportation hubs, business districts, and tourist areas as people resume work and travel.

“Everyone’s safety is our responsibility. Let us continue to choose safe and orderly ways of celebrating, not only during the New Year but throughout the year,” Nartatez said.
