Marcos orders nonstop relief, road repairs in typhoon-hit areas

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Monday directed government agencies to maintain nonstop relief operations and road rehabilitation efforts in areas battered by Super Typhoon Uwan (Fung-wong).

In a situation briefing at the PSC Command Operations Center on Monday, President Marcos instructed the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to continue delivering aid to evacuees displaced by Uwan.

The DSWD reported that around 100,050 families in the Bicol region were affected by the typhoon. In Camarines Sur alone, some 44,000 families were displaced, while another 20,000 were affected in Quezon province.

Meanwhile, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) also reported that Pangasinan was the hardest hit by flooding, prompting preemptive evacuations of more than 426,000 families. Floodwaters have since begun to subside, but rescue and clearing operations remain underway in the province.

As of writing, the OCD confirmed four fatalities linked to the typhoon, though two are still under validation. No missing persons have been reported so far.

The Department of Health (DOH) was ordered to deploy medical teams to all evacuation centers to ensure that the health and sanitation needs of evacuees are met.

On the other hand, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has begun repairing damaged roads and clearing debris to restore access to affected areas and expedite the delivery of relief goods.

The government said 71 roads remain impassable, particularly in Central Luzon, the Cordillera Administrative Region, including Mountain Province, Benguet, and Apayao, and parts of Aurora province.

Mr. Marcos also ordered continuous monitoring of weather conditions. He instructed all government agencies to maintain coordination in recovery and rehabilitation efforts, not only for areas hit by Super Typhoon Uwan, but also those still rebuilding from Typhoon Tino.

Super Typhoon Uwan made landfall in Dinalungan, Aurora, late Sunday, bringing torrential rains and strong winds that caused widespread flooding and infrastructure damage across Luzon.
