An explosive eruption of Mount Kanlaon early Tuesday prompted emergency response efforts from national agencies, with President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. directing continued aid to affected areas, according to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO).

In a press briefing, PCO Undersecretary Claire Castro confirmed that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is actively coordinating with local government units (LGUs) in Western and Central Visayas, which were impacted by the eruption.

“As of today, April 8, the DSWD field offices are closely coordinating with the affected LGUs and continue to distribute family food packs and non-food items,” Castro said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has maintained Alert Level 3 for Mount Kanlaon, warning residents to avoid the six-kilometer permanent danger zone due to potential pyroclastic flows and ashfall.

In response to reports that LGUs have requested additional funding, Castro said Malacañang is prepared to assess and address such needs swiftly.

“If necessary, the Palace will thoroughly review the LGUs’ requirements and provide assistance as needed,” she said.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while urging residents to remain alert and follow official advisories.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) advising pilots to avoid flying near Mount Kanlaon on Negros Island due to a phreatic eruption.

“CAAP has issued a NOTAM for flights near Mt. Kanlaon, with vertical limits from the surface up to 22,000 feet,” the agency stated in its advisory.

This advisory will be effective from 8:20 a.m. on April 8, 2025 until 5:51 a.m. on April 9, 2025.

“Flight operators are advised to steer clear of the volcano due to the potential hazards presented by volcanic ash,” said CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio.

NOTAM is a notice distributed via telecommunication that contains information about the establishment, condition, or change in any aeronautical facility, service, procedure, or hazard, which is essential for personnel involved in flight operations.

The latest Kanlaon eruption produced an ash plume that reached 4,000 meters and led to the cancellation of local classes in the area.
