The Lenten season in the Philippines begins on Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2025, marking the start of 47 days of spiritual reflection and preparation leading up to Easter Sunday on April 20, 2025.
The Diocese of Imus has released guidelines for Catholics in Cavite, detailing the significant dates and observances for Lent and Holy Week 2025:
· Ash Wednesday – March 5
· First Sunday of Lent – March 9
· Palm Sunday – April 13
· Holy Week – April 14-20
· Holy Thursday – April 17
· Good Friday – April 18
· Holy Saturday – April 19
· Easter Sunday – April 20
Lent is an annual Christian tradition of prayers, fasting, and developing a deeper connection with God. Catholics aged 18-59 during this season are encouraged to eat one full meal and two smaller meals without meat.
The Church, however, recognizes that some Catholics may not be able to observe fasting and abstinence due to health or personal circumstances. Exemptions apply to following:
· The sick (including those with chronic illnesses like diabetes or those recovering from surgery)
· Pregnant and nursing mothers who need proper nutrition
· Individuals with physically demanding jobs where fasting could harm their health
· Elderly (60 and above) who are encouraged, but not obligated to fast
· People with mental health conditions that affect eating habits
· Those experiencing food insecurity who have limited meal options
The Diocese of Imus likewise urged the faithful to use this season for spiritual growth by attending mass and Holy Week liturgies, allocating at least one hour of personal prayer, reflecting on their faith by eliminating distractions, seeking reconciliation and peace with others.
