Cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in the Philippines tripled from January 1 to February 22, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

The DOH reported 7,598 cases during this period, a sharp increase from the 2,665 cases recorded in the same timeframe in 2024.

Despite the rise, the numbers remain lower than the peak of over 2,500 weekly cases reported in February 2023.

Health officials said 56% of the cases, or 4,225 infections, were found in children aged four and below.

Another 2,069 cases affected children between the ages of five and nine.

HFMD is a contagious viral infection that spreads through direct contact with saliva, nasal secretions, or fluids from the blisters of an infected person.

The virus can also spread through contaminated objects, such as toys, utensils, and surfaces, if a person touches his eyes, nose, or mouth afterward.

Symptoms of HFMD include fever, sore throat, and painful mouth sores, along with a rash or blisters on the hands, feet, and buttocks.

The DOH advises individuals with HFMD symptoms to isolate for seven to 10 days or until their fever subsides and blisters heal.

Health officials also recommended keeping the personal items of infected individuals separate to prevent transmission.

Regular disinfection of frequently touched surfaces is encouraged to reduce the spread of the virus.
