Senator Sherwin Gatchalian raised concerns over the increasing number of violent incidents involving minors, particularly stabbings, urging schools to tighten their security measures.

“The incidents of stabbings involving minors are rising. Schools should all have proper security measures, guidance programs, and support systems to prevent such conflicts from escalating,” he said.

Gatchalian, who chairs the Senate Committee on Basic Education, urged the Department of Education, law enforcement agencies, and local government units to work together in preventing school violence.

He also called on parents and communities to be proactive in guiding and monitoring children’s behavior.

“Violence among students reflects deeper societal issues, and we must address these concerns collectively to protect the safety and future of our children,” he said.

The senator emphasized that Republic Act No. 12080, the Basic Education Mental Health and Well-Being Promotion Act, should be fully and properly implemented.

The law, which he authored and sponsored, mandates mental health services in schools, including counseling and crisis intervention.

Additionally, the Second Congressional Commission on Education proposed amendments to the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013.

The revisions would require schools to adopt updated anti-bullying policies and designate discipline officers to oversee student behavior.

“Sending our children to school is not just about preparing them to be academically competitive; it’s also about shaping their character and values, which they should carry with them and apply beyond the school walls,” Gatchalian concluded.

Three stabbing incidents involving students have been reported in February alone, highlighting an alarming trend of school-related violence.

In Pasig City, two students from Rizal High School, a seventh grader and a tenth grader, were stabbed during an altercation outside the campus.

In Iloilo City, a separate brawl involving students aged 13 to 17 led to two learners being stabbed.

The incident started within school premises and continued outside, where it turned violent.

A third incident was reported in Marikina, where two female minors were stabbed in the face inside an elementary school.

Details of the attack are still under investigation.
