The National Food Authority (NFA) will start selling rice to local government units (LGUs) at a price of P36 per kilo beginning in February.

This move follows the National Price Coordinating Council’s resolution, which urged the Department of Agriculture (DA) to declare a food security emergency due to the extraordinary rise in rice prices.

“The NFA will start selling rice to the LGUs in February at a price of P36 per kilo. We hope that the LGUs can sell it without exceeding the P38 price ceiling,” Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said during the Metro Manila Council meeting.

He also said the price ceiling and the suggested retail price for NFA rice will be set at P35 per kilo starting in March.

“In March, we will reduce the price to P33 per kilo in Metro Manila and other major cities across the country,” Laurel added.

He further assured the public there was enough supply of NFA rice: “So far, the supply is sustainable throughout the year. Currently, the NFA has 300,000 tons of stock that we will be releasing.”

Laurel emphasized that NFA rice stocks are not aging and are guaranteed to be of high quality, well-maintained, and visually appealing.
