President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte saw their public satisfaction ratings almost tied by the end of 2024, according to the latest survey by Social Weather Stations (SWS) commissioned by Stratbase Group.

Results showed that 51% of Filipinos are satisfied with President Marcos, while 52% are satisfied with Vice President Duterte. Dissatisfaction levels are also close, with 32% expressing dissatisfaction with Marcos and 31% with Duterte. Both officials recorded 16% undecided responses.

The survey was conducted between December 12 to 18, involving face-to-face interviews with 2,160 respondents nationwide. The SWS said it has a margin of error of ±2%.

Frustration over inflation

President Marcos saw 13-point decline in his net satisfaction rating, dropping to +19 in December from +32 in September 2024.

While his ratings in Balance Luzon remained steady at 60%, significant drops were recorded in Mindanao, where satisfaction fell from 52% to 32%, and dissatisfaction surged from 36% to 50%.

Stratbase Group founder and CEO Professor Dindo Manhit attributed this sharp decline to growing public frustration over the government’s perceived inadequate response to surging inflation.

“Filipinos are struggling with the relentless rise in prices of essential goods, and the administration’s efforts to cushion these impacts have been perceived as lacking urgency and effectiveness. This growing economic strain has eroded public confidence,” Manhit said.

He urged the government to implement targeted reforms to combat inflation and create jobs, emphasizing the importance of delivering tangible results to restore public confidence.

Trust issues over fund mismanagement

Vice President Duterte’s net satisfaction rating also dipped to +21 in December, down six points from +27 in September. Her satisfaction ratings dropped significantly in Metro Manila, from 51% in September to 39% in December.

However, she retained strong support in Mindanao, where her satisfaction rating stood at 79%, and dissatisfaction remained low at 12%.

Manhit linked Duterte’s declining ratings to her refusal to clarify the use of confidential and intelligence funds.

“This glaring lack of transparency has not only intensified public distrust; it is the serious impetus in the filing of multiple impeachment complaints now pending in Congress. Such evasiveness severely undermines her credibility and accountability as a public servant,” he explained.

Manhit stressed the need for transparency and accountability. “Public officials must be unwavering in their commitment to disclose how public funds are utilized. Gaining public trust is about ethical leadership that drives responsive policies that effectively serve the people’s interests,” he said.

Meanwhile, the latest SWS survey also showed declines in satisfaction ratings for Senate President Francis Escudero and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

Escudero received a satisfaction rating of 61% and a dissatisfaction rating of 19%, while Romualdez recorded a satisfaction rating of 40% and a dissatisfaction rating of 31%.
