Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin responded to speculations about Vice President Sara Duterte’s potential candidacy for the presidency in 2028, describing it as “too premature” while acknowledging her right to decide.
“Welcome… No, I think it’s too premature, but it’s her privilege,” Bersamin remarked when asked about the Vice President’s political plans.
The statement comes after Duterte revealed she is “seriously considering” running for president in the 2028 national elections.
Speaking to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) during a private trip to Tokyo over the weekend, Duterte expressed concern over the state of the nation and emphasized the need for strong governance.
“What’s happening to the country now can no longer continue. I really believe our country can be great,” Duterte said,
Her remarks contrast with her previous statements, in which she insisted she had no plans to seek the presidency, attributing her political path to “God’s plan.”
“I have no ambition to run as vice president, let alone president, you all know that. I said I did not want to run as president,” Duterte told reporters previously.
