President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. remained firm in his position that the impeachment case against the Vice President will only be divisive and will not benefit Filipinos.

“The President’s position on the impeachment move in the House of Representatives has not changed,” Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said when asked if the Iglesia Ni Cristo peace rally will have a bearing on Mr. Marcos’ stance.

“What will happen to the—if somebody files an impeachment? It will tie down the House, it will tie down the Senate. It will just take up all our time, for what? For nothing. None of this will help improve a single Filipino life. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a storm in a tea cup,” President Marcos earlier said.

INC spokesman Edwil Zabala earlier said the sect supports President Marcos’ position that any move to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte would be polarizing.

“There are many more things which our citizens need that must be attended to. These will not be achieved if all we see taking place is conflict,” Zabala said.

Duterte is facing three impeachment cases, which accuse her of misusing millions of dollars in public funds and of plotting to have Mr. Marcos assassinated. She has denied the allegations.

For his part, Justice Secretary Jesus Remulla said the ongoing investigation into the supposed death threats made by Duterte against the First Family and Speaker Martin Romualdez will not be affected by the INC rally.

“We just have to look at the law as something that equalizes everything between all of us. That is why we cannot give special favors to people because of standing,” Remulla told reporters.

He said the issue is whether or not a criminal act was committed, and the DOJ has to look at it from the merits of the cases.

In a press briefing on Monday, Prosecutor General Richard Fadullon said there is still a need to further evaluate the investigation conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation.

“We are sending prosecutors over to look at the evidence and evaluate the evidence that is in the custody of the [NBI]. Depending on the outcome, we will be able to make a recommendation,” Fadullon said.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago earlier said they are constrained to write a report on Duterte’s supposed culpability based on the information currently available before them.

Duterte failed to appear before the NBI despite the issuance of a subpoena to fully explain her side.
