Group marches to SSS to protest rates

A PROGRESSIVE group on Wednesday stormed the Social Security System headquarters on East Avenue in Quezon City to oppose an increase of 1% in the contribution rate from 14% to 15% starting this month.

The placard-bearing members of the Gabriela Women’s Party stayed in front of the SSS building, saying the contribution rate hike is another burden to the members. “No to SSS premium rate hike,” the group said.

The group’s party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas questioned the state pension fund’s contribution rate increase, saying the members must not bear the brunt of the agency’s shortcomings.

She called the hike as anti-poor. The increase in the contributions of members and employers of up to 15 percent took effect this January 2025.

The SSS cited Republic Act No. 11199 or Social Security Act of 2018 that a 1 percent contribution increase would be imposed on SSS members every two years starting from 12% in 2019 until it reaches 15% in 2025.
