The Southern Police District (SPD) deployed 1,500 officers to assist other law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety and security of millions of devotees attending the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila.
This effort underscores the SPD’s commitment to protecting the public during one of the Philippines’ most significant religious events.
SPD Director Brig. Gen. Manuel Abrugena highlighted the importance of the occasion, stating, “The Feast of the Black Nazarene is a celebration of faith, hope, and unity—a testament to the devotion of Filipinos from all walks of life.”
“As police officers, our role is to maintain peace and order while ensuring that every devotee can participate safely and without fear,” he added.
Abrugena urged his officers to approach their duties with empathy and humility, emphasizing the event’s deep spiritual significance. “Be resolute yet compassionate, vigilant yet approachable, and above all, stay true to our core values of service, honor, and justice,” he advised.
Meanwhile, officials from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), led by Chairperson Romando Artes, visited the Quirino Grandstand in Manila, where the traditional ‘Pahalik’ is being held in preparation for the Traslacion.
The MMDA also inspected its Mobile Command Center and First Aid Station, among other preparations.
Artes noted that they expect a large influx of devotees participating until early morning on January 9, before the procession.
“We have deployed 1,200 personnel specifically for the procession, including those responsible for maintaining cleanliness along the route immediately after the procession passes through,” he stated.
While the MMDA chief assured that clearing and cleaning operations are being conducted to address not only illegally parked vehicles, but also trash and other obstructions. He encouraged the public to dispose of their garbage responsibly, especially during the Traslacion.
“We appeal to our fellow citizens not to throw trash that could cause injury or harm to other devotees who will participate in the procession on Thursday, particularly since many will be joining the Traslacion barefoot,” he said.
Last year’s event attracted 6.5 million devotees, and this year’s celebration is expected to draw even larger crowds.
