Marcos thanks UAE for pardoning 200 Filipinos

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Monday announced that 220 Filipinos detained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been granted pardon by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in celebration of the country’s 53rd National Day.

“This decision, in addition to the 143 Filipinos pardoned during Eid al-Adha, is a testament to the strong ties between our nations,” Mr. Marcos said in a video statement.

The President expressed his “heartfelt gratitude” to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for the compassionate act.

He noted having the honor of meeting the UAE leaders, further underscoring the positive relationship between the two countries.

The pardoned Filipinos are currently undergoing documentation processes to ensure their swift return to the Philippines.

“We pray for their safe journey home to their beloved homeland,” Marcos said.

The gesture highlights the enduring partnership and goodwill between the Philippines and the UAE, home to a significant number of Filipino expatriates.

The UAE traditionally grants pardons to inmates during major national and religious celebrations.
