NSC says there is no political rift in the security sector

The National Security Council (NSC) on Monday dismissed claims of internal conflict within the country’s security sector following allegations by former lawmaker Neri Colmenares.

Colmenares suggested that the recent NSC reorganization reflects a power struggle between “dominant political dynasties” ahead of the midterm elections.

NSC Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya rejected these accusations, asserting that the national security establishment remains united and fully supports the country’s leadership and chain of command.

“This seems to stem from the Makabayan Bloc, Bayan Muna. You know how our friends there operate—they see issues where none exist. They’re trying to create conflict within the government. According to their statement, this supposedly indicates a growing rift in the security sector,” Malaya said.

“Let me clarify: there is no rift in the security sector. Our uniformed personnel and government staff are 100% committed to the constituted authority and chain of command,” he added.

The remarks came after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued Executive Order No. 81, which reorganized the NSC. The order notably removed Vice President Sara Duterte and former presidents from the council’s composition.

Marcos clarified that the reorganization was designed to ensure the NSC remains flexible and responsive to evolving domestic and international challenges. He highlighted its role in protecting national security and sovereignty to promote effective governance and stability.

In contrast, Colmenares interpreted the changes as evidence of a deepening divide between the Marcos and Duterte factions, pointing to the Vice President’s exclusion as a political maneuver.

“This is not just about national security—this is about political survival,” Colmenares stated.

The NSC, as the principal advisory body for national security, integrates plans and policies and advises the President on related issues.

NSC Director General Eduardo Año earlier explained that the restructuring aims to improve policy development to address pressing national security concerns.
