President Marcos reiterated his commitment to modernizing the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) capabilities, highlighting the importance of tackling emerging security challenges as the organization marks its 89th anniversary.

Speaking in Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, the President highlighted the importance of the AFP’s Self-Reliant Defense Posture Revitalization Program, which aims to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities while reducing reliance on foreign sources.

“For the threats we face today are no longer confined to our shores or to the traditional battlefield. They are now complex, multifaceted, and, at times, invisible,” he said during a command conference that coincided with anniversary celebrations.

Present at the top-level meeting were Executive Sec. Lucas Bersamin, Defense Sec. Gilberto Teodoro, National Security Adviser Eduardo Año, and AFP Chief-of-Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner, Jr.

“The geopolitical developments and tensions continue to test our sovereignty and our resolve. The surge in cybersecurity threats, if unchallenged and unaddressed, will challenge our national security,” the President told them.

He noted that the program goes beyond acquiring advanced equipment, focusing on enhancing strategies, upgrading technologies, and training personnel to adapt to both traditional and emerging threats.

“But modernization is not simply about acquiring advanced equipment; it is about transforming the way we think, the way we act, and the way we operate as a unified force,” the Commander-in-Chief said.

“After all, we are building an AFP that can hold its own on the global stage—one that stands shoulder to shoulder with the world’s finest armed forces,” he added.

The President pointed to new security challenges, including cybersecurity threats and disinformation campaigns, which require the AFP to evolve into an agile and responsive force.

Mr. Marcos underscored the importance of equipping the military with tools to succeed in battles not only in the field but also in cyberspace, ensuring peace and stability for the Filipino people.

To further support the AFP, he assured continued government investment in modernization efforts, the welfare of military personnel and their families, and recognition of the armed forces’ invaluable contributions.

Highlighting the heroism within the ranks, the chief executive posthumously awarded the Medal of Valor to First Lieutenant Dhell Jun C. Evangelista, praising his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice in service to the nation.

As the AFP advances into its next chapter, the President urged its members to remain committed to their values of honor, compassion, and patriotism, promising that the government and the Filipino people stand firmly behind them.

“The modern age demands that we meet evolving challenges head-on,” Mr. Marcos said.
