MMDA commends tobacco control policies of NCR LGUs

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) recognized all 17 local government units (LGUs) in the National Capital Region (NCR) for their exceptional efforts in implementing best-practice tobacco control policies.

MMDA Chairman Don Artes praised these units for their support of the campaign against smoking, stating that their accolades reflect a strong commitment to protecting constituents from the dangers of smoking.

Representatives from various local government units (LGUs) were present to accept plaques of recognition during the awarding ceremony held at the MMDA central office in Pasig City.

Artes also commended the cities of Mandaluyong and San Juan for achieving significant milestones in promoting public health and responsible legislation through the passage of their new local ordinances.

In addition, six non-government organizations were awarded by the MMDA, including Action on Smoking and Health, Philippines (ASH Philippines), HealthJustice Philippines, Metro Manila Center for Health Development, Ateneo School of Government, Social Watch Philippines, and Transcending Institutions and Communities, Inc.

ASH Philippines provided training for trainers and enforcers, while HealthJustice Philippines offered legal assistance and helped prepare countermeasures against the impending challenges posed by the tobacco industry on smoke- and vape-free ordinances.

The Metro Manila Center for Health Development (MMCHD) shared technical opinions and indicators for healthy communities through the National Health Promotion Framework.

Ateneo School of Government facilitated the development of the Index for Tobacco Control Sustainability Tool, while Social Watch Philippines participated in quarterly meetings where technical inputs and advocacy materials were exchanged.

Transcending Institutions and Communities, Inc. assisted the agency in building the capacity of public information officers as well as tourism and youth development officers, providing training on the use of geographic information systems.
