A labor group has filed a petition before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to suspend the printing of official ballots for the 2025 national and local elections (NLE) to clean up the list and remove fake and unqualified candidates.
The National Confederation of Labor (NCL) filed the appeal after the poll body released the final list of 66 senatorial aspirants who will vie for the 12 seats available in the May 2025 midterm polls.
“I am asking the COMELEC to clean up the list of candidates by removing fake and unqualified candidates, to prevent incidents like the one involving Alice Guo, also known as Guo [Hua] Ping, a Chinese citizen who filed her candidacy and won as mayor despite her Chinese citizenship,” NCL spokesperson Ernesto Arellano said in his petition.
Among the notable names running for the Senate is Apollo Quiboloy, the controversial leader of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC), who once again shows interest in entering politics.
Arellano also requested all candidates to submit a certified true copy of their birth certificate and a certificate of no criminal record from the[National Bureau of Investigation.
The labor spokesperson likewise questioned aspirants with dual citizenship, asking if their loyalty is with the Philippines, especially «amid the foreign powers encroaching the country’s territorial waters.
