DOJ thanks Timor Leste for granting Teves’ 2nd extradition

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday said it is extremely grateful to Timor Leste for ruling again in favor of the country’s extradition request to bring back home expelled Negros Oriental 3rd District Rep. Arnolfo Teves, Jr.

The former lawmaker is currently facing murder charges lodged against him before a Manila court for the killing of former Governor Raul Degamo and several others.

“This is a resounding victory for the Filipino people, a testament of our present government’s unyielding commitment to attain real time Justice at all costs,” said Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla.

The agency shared it expected no less than a second grant of extradition by Timor Leste, which only affirms the stance of the government that there is merit in the request and that they made the right decision the first time around.

The DOJ said the second round of extradition hearings was a result of the procedural objections made by the camp of Teves, despite bringing it up as a “late appeal” after whole-heartedly and voluntarily participating in a proceeding he only refuted after receiving an “unfavorable decision.”

The judicial system of Timor Leste Court has been consistent with the tenets of fair play and justice considering the positive development in this case, according to the DOJ.

It said the Philippine government highly commends the legal process of Timor Leste for displaying the efficiency of their justice system.
