Former rebel surrenders to army forces in Camarines Norte

A rebel from a dismantled terrorist group surrendered to government forces in Labo, Camarines Norte.

According to reports from the 201st Infantry Brigade, troops were conducting routine security operations in Barangay Dumagmang when they received information from a concerned citizen about the presence of an armed group near his residence.

The concerned citizen was later identified as Emmmanuel Balotan, alias Popoy, who admitted that he is one of the remnants of the dismantled terrorist group and wishes to surrender.

Further information from Balotan led to the recent encounter between the troops and the armed group on November 30.

In a statement, Maj. Gen. Cerilo Balaoro Jr., Commander of the 2nd Infantry “Jungle Fighter” Division, commended the courage of the former rebel for deciding to return to the folds of the law and assist government forces in their campaign for peace.

“This surrender is a testament to the growing disillusionment within the ranks of the Communist terrorist group,” said Maj. Gen. Balaoro.

He also noted that more members are realizing the futility of armed struggle and are choosing to embrace peace and reconciliation.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of the community’s role in the government’s peace efforts.

“We are grateful to the concerned citizens who continue to stand against violence and work towards peace in their communities,” Maj. Gen. Balaoro added.

“Your support greatly strengthens our resolve to achieve lasting stability in the region.”
