The Commission on Elections (Comelec) disqualified Edgar Erice from the 2025 elections.
This decision follows a petition from Raymond Salipot, who accused Erice of spreading false information to disrupt the electoral process.
Comelec’s Second Division ruled that Erice violated the Omnibus Election Code, specifically Section 261(z)(11), which prohibits the dissemination of misleading information during elections.
The ruling emphasized that Erice’s statements were unsubstantiated and damaging, portraying the Philippines as a “guinea pig” for untested voting technology.
Erice’s claims regarding the Comelec’s contract with Miru Systems were deemed unfounded and lacked credible evidence.
The Comelec noted that Erice’s actions were intended to create confusion among voters and undermine the electoral system’s integrity.
In response, Erice criticized the disqualification as “flimsy” and expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would overturn the decision.
He also indicated plans to pursue legal action against Comelec officials regarding the controversial contract.
