Philippine Army strengthens ties with South Korea, ASEAN allies

The Armed Forces of the Philippines Army unit earlier this week strengthened ties with their South Korean and ASEAN counterparts during the inaugural Korea-ASEAN Armies Chiefs Conference (KACC) held in Daejeon, South Korea.

The Commanding General of the Philippine Army, Lt. Gen. Roy M. Galido, met with South Korean Army Chief of Staff Gen. Park An-su during the KACC.

The event was also attended by Gen. Muhammad Hafizuddeain bin Jantan, the Malaysian Chief of Army; Gen. Mao Sophan, the Royal Cambodian Army Chief; and Sr. Lt. Gen. Nguyen Van Nghia, deputy commander in chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army.

The Philippine Army has maintained strong relations with the South Korean Army, engaged in high-level dialogues in both bilateral and multilateral settings, such as the KACC and the Land Forces Summit in Japan.

Notably, the Philippine Army is set to host the 2nd Philippine Army-Republic of Korean Army (ROKA) Staff Talks next year.

“The first part of said multilateral meeting had the South Korean and ASEAN army leaders assess the current regional security landscape, while the second part focused on discussions regarding strategic networks among the participating ground forces,” stated Philippine Army Spokesperson Colonel Louie Dema-ala.

The KACC’s multilateral security talks aim to support peace on the Korean Peninsula and enhance multilevel security cooperation for a coordinated response to regional threats.
