Rep. Marissa Magsino of the OFW party-list expressed relief over President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s signing into law the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers which upholds the rights and welfare of Filipino seafarers.

Magsino said the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers is a victory that marks a pivotal moment in the OFW Party List’s advocacy for the welfare and protection of Overseas Filipino Workers, in which Filipino seafarers comprise a significant segment.

Magsino said RA 12021 is the country’s response to our commitment as a signatory to the Maritime Labor Convention and the Convention on the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) for Seafarers.

“From navigating the world’s oceans to facilitating international trade, Filipino seafarers have played a vital role in driving the maritime sector forward. Their dedication, hard work, and resilience have not only contributed to the growth of our economy, but have also strengthened our position as a key player in the global shipping industry,” she said being the bill’s principal author at the House of Representatives.

Republic Act 12021 seeks to protect the rights and interests of Filipino seafarers, ensuring they have full protection before, during, and after employment, especially in the event of maritime accidents, epidemics or pandemics, or other natural or man-made crises.
