Chavez confirms search for media security task force chief

Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cesar Chavez on Wednesday confirmed that Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin has tasked him with finding a new executive director for the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS).

In an ambush interview, Chavez said the search is being conducted “as soon as possible,” emphasizing his preference for appointing someone from the media or broadcast industry.

He said a leader from the media sector would better understand the dangers journalists face and could implement measures to prevent violence against them in the line of duty.

“We are now looking for someone to recommend to the President for the role,” Chavez said.

Undersecretary Paul Gutierrez earlier confirmed that his term as PTFoMS executive director ended.

Gutierrez, who was appointed in May 2023, thanked President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the opportunity to serve and colleagues in the government and the press for their support during his term.

He also highlighted agreements with the Public Attorney’s Office and the Commission on Elections to provide legal aid and protection for journalists, particularly during elections.
