Three Filipinas have been announced as recipients of the Women in STEM scholarships, awarded under the ASEAN-UK SAGE (Supporting the Advancement of Girls’ Education) Programme and the British Council Women in STEM Scholarships.

Maria Andrea Kristina Onglao will study MSc Environmental Data Science and Machine Learning at Imperial College London under the ASEAN-UK SAGE Women in STEM Scholarship.

Meanwhile, set to continue their education at the University of Bath are Mikaela Gail Santos, who will study MSc Biotechnology (Healthcare Biotechnologies), and Laravill Lanohan, who will take up MSc Biotechnology (Sustainable Biotechnologies). Santos and Lanohan are both recipients of the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship.

Hundreds of students applied to the highly competitive selection process, where the three students from the Philippines secured scholarships among the total of 24 awarded across ASEAN and Timor-Leste.

Each recipient will receive a fully funded opportunity to complete a master’s degree at prestigious universities in the United Kingdom, where they will begin their studies in September.

Both of the aforementioned scholarship schemes seek to address gender disparities in access to STEM education. Women account for only 29.2 percent of the STEM workforce globally despite representing almost half of the non-STEM employment sector, according to World Economic Forum.

The ASEAN-UK SAGE and the British Council Women in STEM scholarship program will reopen in January 2025.
