More than allies, we’re family – US Defense Secretary

The US Defense Department on Tuesday extended its sympathy to the victims of bad weather in the country and reaffirmed both country’s commitment to strengthen ties.

During a meeting in Malacanang with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., US Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III said that both countries shared common interests and values.

“Mr. President, let me echo Tony’s comments on the warm welcome. We – it really is great to be back in the country again. And also, it’s – offer of condolences for those who have been affected by the storm,” Austin said to Marcos.

“I’ve said a number of times that we’re more than allies, we’re family. And it always feels that way when I’m working with our colleagues. We have common interests, common values,” he added.

Austin also hopes to strengthen the alliance of both countries adding that both nations were more than allies.

“We look forward to continuing to work with you and your team to move even further. But thanks for your leadership, Mr. President,” he said.

US State Secretary Anthony Blinken and Austin are in the Philippines for the Fourth Philippines-United States 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue with their Filipino counterparts Secretaries Enrique Manalo and Gilberto Teodoro, Jr.

This policy-level dialogue is co-chaired by the Secretaries of the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of National Defense, along with the US Department of State and Department of Defense.
