Southwest monsoon rains to prevail despite ‘Carina’ exit, says PAGASA

Super typhoon ‘Carina’ left the Philippine area of responsibility at 6:20 a.m. Thursday, July 25, but the southwest monsoon or ‘habagat’ weather system remains, said weather specialist Veronica Torres.

This means moderate to intense rains will prevail over the western section of Luzon until Saturday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued an orange rainfall warning in typhoon-hit areas, saying flooding is still possible.

“CARINA is now less likely to directly bring heavy rainfall over any portion of the country. However, the Southwest Monsoon enhanced by CARINA will bring heavy to intense rainfall over Ilocos Region, Zambales, and Benguet for today (Thursday) while moderate to heavy rainfall over various localities in the western portion of Luzon from today through Saturday,” PAGASA said in its 11:00 a.m. advisory.

“Carina” will cross the Taiwan Strait and make its final landfall over southeastern China by Thursday afternoon or evening.
