Philippines needs international support, diplomatic solution on WPS incident — expert

A maritime expert on Saturday said the Philippines needs international support as tensions with China escalate in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), particularly regarding the recent Ayungin Shoal incident.

“We still need the support of the international community and it is only right we have their support to condemn such actions,” University of the Philippines professor-lawyer Jay Batongbacal said.

Despite the provocations, Batongbacal, an expert on international maritime law, emphasized the country’s commitment to seeking diplomatic and peaceful resolutions.

He said that while unlawful acts are concerning, not all incidents constitute acts of war under international law.

Batongbacal also underscored the importance of viewing recent developments calmly and pursuing national interests peacefully.

He noted that the Mutual Defense Treaty and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement with the United States remain in effect, ensuring continued support for the Philippines.

Batongbacal mentioned international laws regarding such incidents, classifying them as “frontier incidents,” which are not enough to warrant armed self-defense, thereby allowing space for diplomatic resolution.
