The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has commended the United Nations (UN) Security Council on its adoption of a new resolution that calls for the immediate ceasefire and safe release of hostages in war-torn Gaza on Thursday, June 20.
In supporting the declaration, the DFA demonstrated its role as a reliable ally of the international community in upholding peace and stability in the region.
It also extended its outright support in “alleviating the suffering of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire” through implementation of measures such as immediate ceasefire, safe release of hostages, and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.
“The Philippines reiterates its call for an immediate ceasefire, the safe release of hostages, and the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza… It is imperative to alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire,” DFA said.
“The Philippines remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Gaza. The country stands ready to contribute to initiatives that foster stability, security, and peace in the region,” it added.
The UNSC adopted a comprehensive three-phase ceasefire deal aimed at resolving the crisis in Gaza on June 10. In the initial phase, the Council enforced an immediate, comprehensive ceasefire, prioritizing the urgent release of hostages and repatriation of those who lost their lives.
Key actions include: (a) exchanging Palestinian prisoners, (b) withdrawing Israeli forces from Gaza’s populated zones, (c) ensuring safe return for Palestinian civilians to their homes, and (d) scaling up humanitarian aid distribution across the region.
Phase two of the agreement aims for a permanent end to hostilities, contingent on releasing all remaining hostages in Gaza and a full Israeli withdrawal from the area.
The third phase initiates a major, multi-year reconstruction plan for Gaza, including the compassionate return of deceased hostages’ remains to their families, ensuring closure and dignity for all affected parties.
In the passing of the resolution, 14 countries, including China, voted in favor. However, the Russian Federation abstained, citing concerns over the absence of a negotiation process and uncertainty regarding Israel’s official agreement. The ‘Arab world’ supports it, hence, the reason why Russia did not veto the resolution.
