A devastating fire swept through Barangays Tanza Bonifacio and Rizal Estanzuela in Iloilo City proper early Monday morning, causing approximately ₱667,000 in total damage to properties.

The blaze, which started around 2 AM, left 84 families homeless. The fire caused extensive destruction to houses made of light materials, according to Fire Superintendent Melanie Habawel, City Fire Marshal of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

In Tanza Bonifacio, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported that 60 families were affected, with 28 homes completely destroyed and three partially damaged.

In Barangay Estanzuela, 24 families were impacted, with four homes fully burned and nine partially damaged.

The displaced families are currently taking shelter at Rizal Elementary School.

The fire reached a third alarm before it was extinguished. Firefighters battled huge flames as residents watched in horror.

Authorities have yet to determine the official cause of the fire, but it was believed to have started in the Zerrudo residence, where a candle was reportedly left burning.

In a status update posted on his official Facebook page, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said they have already reached out to the victims and relief efforts are ongoing through the City Social Welfare and Development Office.

Treñas, through his daughter Raisa Treñas, promptly provided essential supplies like water containers, buckets, mats, and pillows to fire victims in Barangays Tanza Bonifacio and Estanzuela.

The mayor likewise urges those wishing to help to visit the evacuation center at Rizal Elementary School.
