PAGASA: Low pressure area may enter Philippines this week

A cloud cluster has formed into a low pressure area (LPA) near southeast Mindanao, which may enter the Philippines either by Wednesday evening or Thursday morning, state weather forecasters have announced.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) monitored the LPA at 1,255 kilometers east of southeastern Mindanao around 8:00 AM on Wednesday, May 22.

PAGASA projects the weather disturbance to make a landfall over the provinces in the Bicol and Eastern Visayas regions by either late Friday or Saturday. This means scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms are expected.

“If the ridge weakens earlier, (the) LPA may instead recurve over the Philippine Sea near Bicol Region-Eastern Visayas and develop into TD (tropical depression) by Friday or Saturday,” the state weather bureau said in a virtual climate forum.

By weekend, PAGASA said the trough of the LPA, which may also develop into a tropical depression, may bring scattered rainshowers over the eastern portion of Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas. This may trigger flashfloods and landslides.
