Following the “Asoka makeup” trend that has been circulating on the internet, a Philippine version called the “Pillin Mo Ang Pilipinas” trend has also made waves with many celebrities and social media personalities joining in on the challenge and promoting the Filipino culture.
While content creator Whamoscruz had also joined in on the fun by highlighting many local workers such as street vendors and jeepney drivers in his video, video editor JAK Seventy-Three couldn’t help but notice how clips from his own work were used in the “Piliin Mo Ang Pilipinas” entry without his permission.
The video editor posted a video about the situation on his Facebook page, showing the part of Whamsocruz’s video which had used clips from his 2023 video about the Sinulog Festival celebration.
In the video’s comment section, some netizens also pointed out how the Whamoscruz video had intentionally removed JAK Seventy-Three’s watermark and failed to credit him for using the clips. They had also urged him to take legal action and ask for monetary compensation.
As JAK Seventy-Three’s video grew traction, only then did Whamoscruz provide credit in his video’s comments section.
“Festival clips from: JAK Seventy-Three,” the content creator said a few hours after posting the viral video.
Under the Republic Act No. 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, artistic works such as “audiovisual works and cinematographic works and works produced by a process analogous to cinematography or any process for making audio-visual recordings” are protected by copyright, which prohibits it from being used without permission from the original author.
While Whamoscruz shared a behind-the-scenes vlog for the viral video, he has yet to release a statement about JAK Seventy-Three’s video as of writing.
