On World Press Freedom Day, President Marcos lauded journalists and media practitioners for their pivotal role as guardians against misinformation and fake news.

“In Bagong Pilipinas, we celebrate our journalists for their courage in conveying unbiased reports, and we rely on them to continue being the stalwarts of truth and transparency,” President Marcos stated in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday evening.

“As the fourth pillar of our democracy, their words serve as our strongest defense against misinformation and fake news. Now, more than ever, their commitment to their work is crucial,” he emphasized.

The Presidential Communications Office (PCO), on the other hand, reiterated its dedication to safeguarding press freedom and ensuring the protection of journalists’ rights and welfare.

“We recognize the myriad challenges journalists and media organizations confront as they carry out their vital duties,” stated the PCO.

“The PBBM administration remains steadfast in its endeavor to foster an environment where journalists can practice their profession free from fear of threats, reprisals, and violence,” it added.

The PCO pledged to persist in its support for journalists and in defending press freedom against misinformation, disinformation, and malign influence.

World Press Freedom Day is commemorated every May 3rd.
